The final tally produced this list of the world's top human-built wonders: • The Great Wall of China • Petra in Jordan • Brazil's statue of Christ the Redeemer • Peru's Machu Picchu • Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid • The Colosseum in Rome • India's Taj Mahal Before the vote ended Friday, organizers said more than 90 million votes had been cast for 21 sites. The new wonders were announced at a star-studded event Saturday in Lisbon, Portugal, that featured performances by Jennifer Lopez and Chaka Khan. The event was hosted by Oscar winners Hilary Swank and Ben Kingsley as well as Bollywood star Bipasha Basu. The top contenders for the seven wonders were last made public in early June. The oldest candidate was Britain's Stonehenge; the newest was Australia's Sydney Opera House. The U.S. Statue of Liberty also was among the choices. To be considered for the competition, all structures had to be built or discovered before 2000. All are among top tourist attractions around the world. The new wonders project was the brainchild of Swiss businessman Bernard Weber. He said he wanted to invite the people of the world to take part in selecting the world's greatest wonders. "So that everybody can decide what the new seven wonders should be and not some government, not some individuals, not some institutions," he said. Vering said she believes the vote has accomplished that goal. "We've managed to bring culture out of the museum -- out of the dusty, dry academic corners -- and have people talk about it," she said. "That, we feel, is the greatest achievement of this campaign." i believe it doesnt belong in the 7 man made wonders Christ the Redeemer was completed in 1931 but Angkor Wat in Cambodia was built in 1200 AD and the largest man made religous monument in the world and its not even one of the 7 wonders of the world in 900 AD Angkor city had a population of 1,500,000 and London in1801 had a population of 1,117,290 and Angkor City back then was larger then Los Angeles CA today

I'm brazilian and I strongly disagree with the election of the Christ Redeemer as a world wonder. The world has lots of things that are way more beautiful than that. Even the city of Rio does

I think the Belogradchik Rocks in Bulgaria had to become part of the new world wonders. I dont think the Arena in Rome is a big wonder if you ask me.

My understanding of 'wonders" would have to be something beyond human imagination or not technologically/humanly possible at the time when it was built. Based on that, while most the old 7 wonders are in total ruins, they are wonders because it's hard to imagine how they can exist at that time without the tools we have today. So Egypt's Pyramid should be still in, and Taj Mahal is just like any other majestic building to me. I really don't understand why it's a wonder.
