THE CENTURY OF SELF(EPISODE 2):The programme explores how those in power in post-war America used Freud's ideas about the unconscious mind to try and control the masses. Politicians and planners came to believe Freud's underlying premise - that deep within all human beings were dangerous and irrational desires and fears. They were convinced that it was the unleashing of these instincts that had led to the barbarism of Nazi Germany. To stop it ever happening again they set out to find ways to control this hidden enemy within the human mind.Sigmund Freud's daughter, Anna, and his nephew, Edward Bernays, provided the centrepiece philosophy. The US government, big business, and the CIA used their ideas to develop techniques to manage and control the minds of the American people. But this was not a cynical exercise in manipulation. Those in power believed that the only way to make democracy work and create a stable society was to repress the savage barbarism that lurked just under the surface of normal American life. Sadly I think it is a habit of the week and cowardly of mankind to form gangs/ tribes/ packs. I also think the membership of such groups are so important to some that right and wrong is set aside, and the group may be manipulated.I think it begins early in life; how many kids cartoons have the message that you should stick by your friends/ family? Shouldn't right and wrong be the message before simple loyalty to friends?

I like to collect old books, and have a 'Polite Preceptor' school book from 1795. In that book there are some articles which seem to indicate a belief that humanity and other species have developed and would continue to do so; to evolve. I don't think Darwin's ideas were entirely new.As for freud, his form of analysis doesn't seem to be brand new either, I think it's the lack of ethics that has developed in the last few hundred years which has allowed the real manipulation of mankind.

Freud was to psychology like Darwin is to evolution. They both are given credit for the foundation of their academic area but many many discoveries have came about since to add to the puzzle of their huge accomplishments.

Well said. The world has not changed in the sense that the ruling elite exploit and control the populations through religion..it's always been that way. But what has changed is the addition of psychology and controlled media, which enhances the control.

This video is based on unsound ideology. The truth is, humans are networking, community amimals. If authority and media tell us it is justifiable to bomb Japan, we believe it...following the behavior of others around us. Cohersed groupthink...brainwashing, conditioning, denial....very similar to Nazi, Germany. Our minds are very malleable, but our instinct and natural state is to protect ALL of humanity, but this instinct has been tampered with through racism, nationalism, and ethnocentrism.

I don't get it: If you're having mental problems caused by combat stress ,you're irrational or have a bigger affinity to fascism? This seems quite twisted to me.If you have problems with killing or with being killed, this indicates irrational, violent subconscious content? No, don't get those guys.

I don't know about Edward L. Bernays. I read his book "Propaganda" and it talks about using propaganda for good. It advocates responsible use and not deception.
